
History of Denver, CO
Denver was first founded in the year 1858. When it was first founded, it was actually an area that was used for gold mining. A large group of gold miners settled into the area and started looking for Gold. When they first got there, it was known as Montana City and was located around the South Platte River. They did not have much luck with their gold finding, and then sought after gold in a different area located in Georgia. Later, the city was renamed Denver. Just before Colorado made part of the Union in 1876, they named Denver the territorial capital of the state. Soon after it was part of the Union, crime began to corrupt the area. There were some major crime bosses in the area. One of these was known as Soapy Smith. The city began to rise up some after this, but then in 1893 there was a depression in the area because the prices of silver dropped dramatically. Organizations of Denver Colorado One of the biggest organizations that was started in Denver was the United Way. While this was not the name of it initially, it was later known as this. The United Way is an organization that is well known to this day for the charity work that they do across the world. They raise money and help to provide for the poor in the area. The city of Denver is known as the starting place of this major organization that has done so much good around the world. There are also some other organizations that can call Denver home. It was also the home of many great companies- one of which was the Colburn Automobile Company. Winter Olympics In the 20th century, Denver underwent a lot of growth. In fact, in 1970, Denver was selected to host the Winter Olympics which were to take place in 1976. Later, this plan was shot down because they found that it was going to cost a lot of money and it was simply something that the people in the area were not willing to do at that time. The governor of Colorado at the time also played a big role in making sure that the Olympics did not take place in Denver. He felt that it would be against their environmental efforts that they had going on at the time and did not want to run the risk of ruining the efforts. Education and Schools in Denver One thing that Denver is well known for is its school system. The public school system is one of the largest school systems now, and it started out as a log cabin in 1859. There are also several other higher education centers and colleges in Denver. You will find the University of Denver to be one of the most popular. Some of the others include the Metropolitan State College of Denver, and the University of Colorado Denver. There is also a major health sciences school in the area. While there are a lot of schools within the actual city of Denver, there are others that can be found in the surrounding area as well. Denver's Sister Cities Denver's sister cities were first established in 1948. This relationship was established with Brest, Finistere France. They have also since had several other sister cities across other countries such as Japan, Kenya, Israel, Brazil, Mexico, India, Italy, China, Ethiopia, and Mongolia. Their regional council of governments also has a very close knit relationship with one of the Iraqi provinces- the Baghdad Governorate.
